Dear Parents of a Sixth Grade Student:
The sixth grade team’s overall focus is to assist your child in becoming:
An intellectually reflective person
One of the tools that will enable us to teach this is the sixth grade notebook. All students will be required to have a BIG 3” three ring binder, which they will organize and maintain. Tutorial teachers will have a sample binder for students to see and an outline of how the notebook and material should be organized. The tutorial teacher will assist students in putting their notebook together.
Supplies for sixth grade: 3” three ring binder
9 two pocket folders (NO Brads)
Loose-leaf paper (College or wide rule)
Black or blue pens & #2 pencils w/erasers
Color pencils or crayons
1 red pen or pencil
1 glue stick
Inexpensive calculator (optional)
It is recommended that students have poster board, markers and rulers to complete projects home.
The students have received a planner in which they are to record their homework, keep their locker number, their combination and their computer password. This planner is much like the ID card; it is to be with them at all times except for lunch. This planner will be the first thing you see when you open the large 3-inch binder. Please check your child’s planner nightly. Teachers often write notes in the planner. Please feel free to write a note to a teacher in the planner also. Your child should show the planner note to that teacher upon their return to school.
PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CHILD’S PLANNER NIGHTLY. IF THEY CAN NOT PRODUCE THE HOMEWORK INDICATED FOR A PARTICULAR CLASS HAVE THEM COMPLETE THAT ASSIGNMENT.
Teachers will provide a letter explaining their courses (syllabus), a checklist or the standards for their classes to be put in your child’s notebook. Please review and sign these within the first two weeks. This will explain what the children are to learn and how they will demonstrate that they have met the curricular standards in each subject. You will find these behind each of the class folders.
As a parent, you should review the notebook in order to see what your child is learning, what homework is due and what projects they have pending. There will be a tutorial section where your student will reflect on their learning and develop learning plans.
Students will have a tutorial time every day where their teacher will check the planner to make sure that the homework assignments have been written down. The teacher will be available to assist students with their studies or your child will be able to go to another teacher at this time for assistance. This is also the time that your child can get any work they may have missed due to an absence or visit the Information Center.
Your child should come to school prepared: healthy, in uniform and with supplies.
The sixth grade team would like to invite you to visit our classes. We welcome your presence and any assistance you could provide to the school. Even though middle-schoolers act like they don’t want you involved, they really do want and need you to play an active part within the school.
We believe that it is essential that we work together with your child to provide the very best education. We meet as a team every other day and are happy to meet with you. You may email us easily with your questions and concerns.
