Schweinfurt Middle School
Dear Parents of a 7th grade student:
The seventh grade team’s overall focus is to assist your child in becoming:
“An intellectually reflective person”
One of the tools that will enable us to teach this focus is the seventh grade notebook. Each student will be required to have a (big) 3” three ring binder, which they will organize and maintain. Tutorial teachers will have a sample notebook for students to see and an outline of how the notebook and material should be organized. The tutorial teacher will assist students in putting their notebook together.
Supplies for seventh grade:
ü 3” three ring binder
ü 9 two-pocket folders without brads (one for each class + 1 more)
ü loose-leaf paper
ü blue or black pens & pencils w/erasers
ü color pencils (map pencils)
ü inexpensive calculator
ü 1 box of tissue
It is recommended that students have poster boards, markers & rulers to complete projects at home.
Each teacher will provide a letter explaining their course (syllabus), a checklist or the standards for their class to be put in your child’s notebook. Please review and sign these within the first two weeks. This will explain what the child is to learn and how they will demonstrate that they have met the curricular standards in each of our subjects. You will find these behind each of the class folders.
The students will each receive a planner where they are to record their homework, keep their locker number, their combination and their computer password. This planner is much like the ID card—it is to be with them at all times except for lunch. This planner will be the first thing you see when you open the notebook. The student should bring this and the notebook home each evening for you to review.
The student handbook is on the school website: http://www.schw-ms.eu.dodea.edu where you will also find information about classes and assignments.
As a parent you should review the notebook in order to see what your child is learning, what homework is due and what projects they have pending. There will be a tutorial section during the day where your child will reflect on their learning and develop learning plans.
7th Grade Homework Policy
· when completed late and turned in late the work is often no longer relevant
· teachers cannot hand back papers as students will copy another students paper
· managing the paperwork and keeping answer keys, grading scales, and backtracking grades becomes unmanageable
· it is unfair to students who do the work and turn it in on the day it is due
The team does realize that sometimes students forget or there is an event at home that keeps students from completing the assignment. In order to provide options for these students the following is in place:
· Students can report to Ms. Dauber’s room (117) during the first 20 minutes of lunch/recess to do the assignment.
· Students can complete the assignment during tutorial.
Your child will have a tutorial period every day where their teacher will check the planner to see if your child has written down their homework. This teacher will be available to assist your child with their studies, or your child will be able to go to another teacher at this time for assistance. This is also the time that your child can get any work they have missed due to an absence and receive assistance. It is not necessary to call the school to request make-up work. When your child returns from being ill or in the case of an emergency, they can get the work at this tutorial time. Your child will have the same number of days to make up missed work as the number of days he/she was absent.
Your child should come to school prepared: healthy, in uniform, and with supplies. Please encourage your child to bring water. Bottled water is allowed and encouraged in the classroom.
The seventh grade team would like to invite you to come visit our classes. We would welcome your presence and any assistance you could provide to the school. Even though middle-schoolers act like they don’t want you involved, they really do want and need you to play an active part within the school.
We believe that it is essential that we work together with your child to provide the very best education. We meet as a team every other day and are happy to meet with you. We also use email so you can contact us easily with your questions and concerns:
